Ask The Trainer #111 – Gaining Muscle & Losing Fat At The Same Time

QUESTION: I want to lose weight more than gain weight. I also want to gain muscle in my arms, back, and stomach. I don’t what supplements to take? Sarah ANSWER: Hi Sarah. Based upon what you’ve explained, it sounds like you’d like to build some muscle and reduce the amount of fat on your body. There are lots of talking heads in the Fitness Industry who’ve made the assertion you have to focus on either muscle building, or fat loss… but you can’t do both simultaneously. This idea is absolutely false. As you build more muscle, your basic metabolic rate will increase, which supports the reduction of body fat. So yes, BOTH of these objectives can be achieved at the same time. There’s a plethora of sports nutrition supplements on the market targeted at consumers who want to lose fat and build muscle. In the modern day, it seems everybody and their uncle has some new, so- called “cutting-edge, miracle supplement” they’re trying to launch into the industry. Many of these products seem appealing and exotic at face value, but from a scientific perspective they offer little-to-no value to the consumer. This is why I always recommend beginning with a base of supplements I know have been thoroughly researched and have also withstood the test of time to demonstrate their value and safety to the consumer. That being said, the first supplements I’m going point you in the direction of are: branched chain amino acids, creatine, glutamine, and whey protein. Since I know EFX Sports is a reputable brand of exceptional quality, I’m going suggest a few popular supplements on their roster that I feel good about recommending to people. 1. Training Ground BCAA: Branched Chain amino acids activate a catalyst known in the biochemistry world as mTOR – a protein complex that works as a signaling mechanism to increase protein synthesis in the body. These means more sufficient recovery, which, in turn, leads to more productive muscle gains. BCAAs also support numerous other functions in the body the body like transporting oxygen, producing energy, and stabilizing blood sugar levels. Freeform BCAAs produce the greatest benefits when taken on an empty stomach before, during, and after workouts. 2. Kre-Alkalyn Hardcore: This is popular, multipurpose creatine supplement. It contains Kre-Alkalyn, a stable, buffered creatine monohydrate that is compatible with the pH of the human body, so that it assimilates most efficiently and helps to avoid common issues other creatine products on the market may cause. Creatine supports the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the body’s primary energy chemical that is most significant to athletes or people looking to improve their physical performance. Research demonstrates creatine can improve strength and anaerobic power output. Moreover, creatine serves an important role in boosting protein synthesis to enhance lean muscle gains, increasing cellular hydration levels, preventing the decline of ATP synthesis, and preventing mitochondrial damage to DNA caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Additionally, Kre-Alkalyn Hardcore is unique in the fact that in addition to Kre-Alkalyn, it also contains a blend of thermogenic herbs that will kick-start your motivational energy and give your metabolism a boost to support fat loss. Training Ground Glutamine: Since glutamine occupies the composition of skeletal muscles more than any other amino acid, it is recognized as an essential supplement to include the stack of anyone looking to build more muscle. The body requires glutamine for optimal protein synthesis (muscle building) to occur. Research has shown that glutamine also plays significant roles in supplying energy to the brain, fighting fatigue, improving exercise endurance, and supporting the synthesis of human growth hormone (HGH) which is important for people wanting to build more muscle and reduce body fat levels. Furthermore, glutamine is required for rapidly dividing cells, especially cells of the gut and immune system. This is why it is often recommended for people with immune deficiencies and also those who suffer from diseases that cause damage to the gastrointestinal tract. 4. Training Ground Pure Whey: Since whey protein is known to digest more rapidly than other sources of protein, this trait makes it a great protein source for increasing protein synthesis in the body. TG Pure Whey protein shakes are ideal to use to bridge gaps between your main meals when you’re feeling hungry or craving something sweet. Besides supporting muscle growth, quality whey protein such as TG Pure Whey also contributes to the synthesis of L-Glutathione, the master antioxidant in the body that works to detoxify the body and liver. Additionally, whey protein concentrate contains naturally occurring lactoferrin and immunoglobulins, which contribute to maintaining a healthy immune system. Now that we’ve established the primary supplements I think will help support your goals, I want to point out that the supplements won’t do much on their own, at least not without a well devised, consistent exercise regimen. That being said, I would suggest you download my FREE eBook , ‘8 week Transformation Triumph‘. This plan will offer you a highly effective exercise regimen to follow, plus it will provide a nutritional strategy to follow and even gives you suggestions on the most ideal times to take your supplements so you can obtain the greatest results from them. Before beginning any new exercise program or supplements you should first consult with your physician. Hopefully this information helps get you off to a productive start towards your goals!
